Whether you are a high-level competitive athlete or a weekend outdoor enthusiast, chances are you’ve sustained some type of injury during your athletic participation. As former collegiate athletes, all of our doctors understand your desire to get back to being active as quickly as possible. Techniques our doctors often use in sports therapy treatment include laser therapy, hyperice products, heat/ice muscle stimulation, Graston Technique, myofascial release, Rocktape, and cupping therapy.
What is laser therapy and how is it performed?
At Prime Sports Med, we use a 20 watt Class 4 Laser from Aspen Lasers. Treatments are performed by positioning the laser hand-piece approximately ½” directly above the skin and surrounding the area of injury and pain with the laser treatment beam. With a repetitive sweeping motion, photons of laser light penetrate the skin and underlying tissue and are absorbed by the cells that convert them into energy.
What are the benefits of laser therapy?
Laser therapy treatment does not require the use of drugs or surgery, so it is noninvasive and there are no dangerous side effects or risks. Unlike many therapy products that only treat the symptoms and mask the pain temporarily, laser therapy is able to treat the cause of the pain and injury, helping the body to heal itself. Laser therapy improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage, improves immune response, and has a strengthening effect on tissue repair. Research shows that injuries treated with laser therapy heal faster.
How is myofascial release performed?
Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. Each Myofascial Release treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams, or machinery. This enables the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia.
What are the benefits of Rocktape?
We think RockTape is the best kinesiology tape in the world! It can be used to treat sports and non-sports injuries including shin splints, plantar fasciitis, runner's knee and back pain. RockTape microscopically lifts the skin away from the muscle and fascia below, creating a decompressive effect. Benefits include decompressing swelling and inflammation, delaying fatigue, normalizing muscle tone, and distribution of physical stress.
What is Electrical Muscle Stimulation?
Electrical Muscle Stimulation, or EMS, is the use of muscle contraction using electric impulses. The contractions are generated by a device and are delivered through electrodes on the skin near the muscles being stimulated. EMS has many benefits, including a strength training tool for healthy patients and athletes, a rehabilitation and preventative tool for partially or totally immobilized patients, and a post-exercise recovery tool.
What is the Graston Technique?
The Graston Technique is a manual soft-tissue therapy that uses specially designed stainless steel instruments and a unique and effective form of gentle massage/scraping to deliver an improved patient outcome. Some common applications of the Graston Technique include carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, hamstring injuries, scar tissue, shin splints, and neck pain.
